Importance of Vitamin D..

Providing both broilers and layers with sufficient and appropriate forms of vitamin D is essential to ensure good bird health An adequate supply of vitamins and minerals is necessary in poultry for boosting defences and allowing the bird to reach its full genetic potential.

Vitamin D is the free vitamin as sunshine is the provider. The preen gland secretes an oily substance that the bird spreads over its feathers. This substance is a precursor to Vitamin D and when exposed to natural sunlight, or a full spectrum of light indoors, the secretion is changed to an active form of vitamin D and then ingested when the bird preens. Vitamin D is necessary for a bird to properly utilize calcium.

Vitamin D, for example, plays a vital role in the regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism, which are key to optimising the skeletal system by strengthening bones, beaks and claws.
